Honoring Black History: NKENNE Expands with French Lessons
By: Chimdindu Ken-Anaukwu
Every February, we take time to reflect on the rich history, resilience, and contributions of Black people across the world. Black History Month is more than a commemoration—it’s a call to remember, reclaim, and celebrate the legacies that shape our present and future.
At NKENNE, we believe that language is history in motion. It carries the voices of those who came before us and connects us to cultures that have endured and evolved over centuries. This year, we’re marking Black History Month in a special way—by adding French to the languages we teach.
But before we dive into that, let’s take a moment to explore how Black History Month began.
Black History Month began as a weeklong celebration in 1926, thanks to Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering historian often called the “Father of Black History.” He chose the second week of February to honor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two figures who played pivotal roles in Black history. Over time, what started as Negro History Week grew into a month-long recognition of Black contributions, struggles, and triumphs—first in the U.S., then in Canada, the U.K., and beyond.
But Black history isn’t just about looking back. It’s about building forward. It’s about preserving our languages, celebrating our cultures, and ensuring that the next generation stays connected to their heritage.
And that’s where NKENNE comes in.
At NKENNE, we believe language is history in motion. It carries stories, preserves identity, and bridges communities across time and space. This year, we’re honoring Black History Month by adding French to our platform—a language that has shaped African and Black diasporic cultures for centuries.
Why French? Because more than 29 African countries speak it. From the markets of Dakar to the music of Kinshasa, French is intertwined with African identity. It’s spoken in Haiti, Louisiana, and parts of the Caribbean, where African heritage has left an indelible mark. By learning French, you’re not just picking up a new skill—you’re unlocking another chapter of Black history.
Our French lessons go beyond textbook learning. We’re bringing African French to the forefront, ensuring you learn:
