Afrochella Or Is It Afrofuture? (Day 2)

By Chris Owusu-Barfi

Day two of one of Africa’s biggest music festivals was as exhilarating and exciting as day one. The artist line-up included Daliwonga (South Africa), Young Stunna (South Africa), Albi-X (DR Congo), Kidi (Ghana), Pheelz (Nigeria), Asake (Nigeria), Mzbel, Praye, Tinny, Kwaw Kese, Tic Tac (Ghana Throwback), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), and Burna Boy (Nigeria) as the headliner for the night. After a crowd-rocking performance from Fireboy DML and Shatta Wale on day one of the music festival, day two was ten times bigger and better with performances from Asake, Pheelz, Kidi, Fally Ipupa, and Burna Boy.

Daliwonga, Young Stunna, and Albi-X were the opening acts for Day 2 of the festival. Even though I wasn’t there to witness their performance, I heard they gave amazing performances that energized the crowd for the upcoming performances of the night. After the opening acts, Kidi came on stage to perform his latest hit singles "Shut Up," "Mon Bébé," and "Touch It." He got the crowd singing along and upped the party mood during his performance. It was an electrifying performance. The old skool crew then arrived to provide us with some throwback highlife/hip-hop music. Their performance made the millennials in the crowd reminisce about their youth and the Gen-Zs in the crowd get a bit lost. Their performance was good, and they gave us a sense of how Ghanaian music has progressed so far.

There were a few DJ sets for about 30 minutes before Pheelz from Nigeria took the Afrochella stage to give his performance. He performed his hit singles "Finesse" and "s before Pheelz from Nigeria took the Afrochella stage to give his performance. He performed his hit singles "Finesse" and "Electricity." It was a captivating performance and made the crowd go crazy (in a positive way). There was so much joy and excitement at the El-Wak Sport Stadium. After Pheelz's performance, Mr. Money With The Vibe, aka Asake, came on stage. The energy was amazing. He performed songs from his widely acclaimed album, MMWTV. The crowd sang word for word, even leading him to share a few dollars due to the energy he was getting from them. When he was performing "Sungba Remix," the crowd expected Burna Boy to jump on stage, but sadly that didn’t happen. This didn’t dampen the spirit of the audience, as they kept the same energy and good vibes throughout his entire performance. Mr. Money's performance was one of the best of the entire music festival, and he truly brought the good vibes.

Before the headliner There was a long pause (30-45 minutes) before the headliner Burna Boy took the stage with his band, the Outsiders. Once he took the stage, the crowd erupted in joy, and we all forgot about the wait time. He gave a thrilling and eye-catching performance. performing songs from the world-acclaimed album Love, Damini, and other albums of his. He also performed "Soke," one of his first singles, before entering the main stream. with his band coming in between performances to give solo performances. He capped off his exhilarating performance with one of the biggest afrobeat songs of the year, "Last Last." This song got every fan in the stadium hyped up and sad at the same time as Burna Boy was finishing up his performance. What a magnificent night it was, and Burna Boy was the best person to cap off this amazing music festival.

Unfortunately, Afrochella will not be returning with the same name next year due to legal issues with Coachella and their name Afrochella. They have rebranded with a new name, "Afro Future," and this rebranding will hopefully bring bigger things for the Culture Management Group. I cannot wait for Afro Future Fest 2023!
